Dustin Matos: Marketing Entrepreneur

MIU Alumnus, Dustin Matos (2014) owns and operates his own digital marketing company, Psynthesis Creative. He manages marketing for over 30 clients and has several contractors working for him. Dustin credits his entrepreneurial start to MIU’s late professor Gurdy Leete. He said that he doesn't think he would be on the path he is now without Gurdy. Gurdy was one of Dustin’s web design professors and he introduced him to his first client. Dustin explains that no teacher in the past had ever encouraged him and believed in his professional abilities enough to give him his start in the design world.  

“I feel that there are many special teachers at MIU, and they are special because of how much they seem to care about their students. My experience of that was certainly clear after comparing it to past experiences with teachers at other schools.”

Dustin lives a very busy life. In addition to owning Psynthesis Creative, he is also the Marketing Director for a Software company called Conest Software Systems and produces progressive rock music under the moniker, The Amnesia Cycle. How does he balance everything? Maybe thanks in part to his MIU education. 

“I learned more about my deep inner self than I thought possible, and those lessons have made me a much more complete and well-balanced person in my life. I don’t think that I would have gained those experiences elsewhere,” Dustin explained.

When asked how Dustin first learned about MIU, he explained that it was his cousin, Samantha Thomas (2011), who introduced him to the school (coincidentally, Samantha is also currently working as a marketing director.) 

“MIU was described as a place that was safe, could help me to become healthier, and learn without stress. That sounded very attractive to me. In my time at MIU, I formed great connections and friendships, I committed to my career in design and marketing, and I did in fact heal in ways. I felt that the combination of Transcendental Meditation, taking one course a month, and the community were so conducive to me developing healthier habits, and building a career that I enjoy.”  

Dustin would later also be joined by his younger brother, Greg, who came to MIU to study in the Cinema Arts and New Media program (formerly known as Media and Communications).

Dustin said that his time at MIU and in Fairfield were some of the best times in his life. He really enjoyed connecting with people who he could relate to: people with a growth mindset that were seeking deeper meaning. “The types of students that come to MIU generally tend to be bright, positive, open-minded, forward-thinking, and supportive. It’s a nice combo.”  

After leaving MIU, Dustin moved back to New Jersey where he reconnected with his high school sweetheart, Kristina. After dating for a few years, they recently got married and currently live in eastern Pennsylvania with their dog Brooklyn.
